5 Ways to Add Character to Your Home

We all flip through the latest home magazine or scroll through Pinterest thinking, ” how do they get their home to look like that?!”. You would be surprised to know that you can achieve a similar look and feel without hiring a designer and breaking the bank. The secret is adding character, which means adding a bit of YOU! Here are our top 5 suggestions for helping your home feel a bit more cozy:

  1. SHOP YOUR SPACE!

Before you run to the store to buy all new things, go up to the attic, check your hand-me-downs,  and gather up all of your favorite family heirlooms. These are the items that will add warmth and a characteristic that no other home will have. Do you have Grandma’s quilt stashed in the linen closet? Perfect! Take it down and drape it over a bench or put it on display!

2.  Shop Thrift Stores and Yard Sales

Shop around at local yard sales, thrift stores, or Goodwill! You will be surprised at the pieces you find that will perfectly fill that space that needed a bit of love. Pieces that look a little worn give you more texture. You may even find something completely out of the ordinary, like the end table pictured below.

3.  Mix Old With New

This goes hand in hand with 1 and 2. If you find something old at a yard sale or something given to you by a family member, pair it with a new pillow or chair that you have had your eye on! This layering technique adds instant character and you can’t go wrong! Below you will see an antique natural wood table paired with contemporary windsor chairs, antique candle holders, and new dinnerware.

4.  Window Treatments

Adding curtains to any space instantly adds warmth, softness, and that oh-so-cozy feel you have been dreaming of.  Make sure to hang your curtains higher than the window frame to add height to your space.

5. Live first and take your time!

The best way to add character to your home is to wait and see how you use your space. Make each corner functional and stylish!

#BuyersGuide: Tips For Buying A Sectional

Sectional buying can be a daunting task if you are new to the game. What size do I need? What If I move ? Do I need to have a huge room for it to fit? We hope this post helps clarify some questions you may have and gives you the nudge you need to make that big decision.

Whether you are  custom ordering from a store in person or ordering online, you will come across terminology that may be confusing. Sectional components mostly consist of Right arm facing (RAF), Left arm facing (LAF), corner pieces, chaises or armless pieces. Right or left arm facing means that when you are looking at the sectional, the arm is on the right or left. An armless piece is useful to connect your LAF or RAF end pieces or add length to your piece and chaise lounges add an L-shaped length without the extra cushions.

Contrary to popular belief. you do not need a huge space for a sectional to work. Actually, a sectional may be the solution to that small awkward space you can’t seem to figure out. A large piece of furniture in a small space can actually anchor the space and help it seem bigger! Eliminating multiple pieces of furniture and using a sectional to accommodate all of your seating needs will make for a cozier, softer space. Here are a couple of examples:

The sectional above features a left arm facing love seat and right arm facing chaise. A sofa with a chaise is a great option for a small space.

This sectional is traditional L-shaped with a RAF love seat and LAF sofa with return.

Before you start shopping, measure your space and draw out a floor plan! You need to know exactly how much room you have to work with, especially because the majority of sectional purchases are special orders and non-returnable. You want to take note of your high traffic areas, point of entrance and all doors and openings. Sectionals are great, but if you are blocking your entrances and flow of traffic, it may not be the best option for your space.

Think you will be moving in a few years? Maybe you should consider a modular sectional. These versatile pieces allow you to add and subtract any number of pieces to fit your space perfectly. See an example of a modular sectional below:

This 8 piece sectional can be modified to be smaller or in a different configuration very easily. See it with all of its pieces here:

Try not to become overwhelmed, find your measurements, and head to Turner’s so a designer can help you find the perfect sectional. We are confident that a sectional can quickly add functionality, comfort, and style that few other furnishings can provide.

#DesignDilemma: Creating A Gallery Wall

Gallery walls are the perfect way to show off your collection and to create a focal point in your space. However, building your art collection and figuring out how to display them, normally scares people away. We hope that these few tips will eliminate your fear and send you on the way to an expertly styled gallery wall.

1. Start collecting!

It takes time to build a big enough collection to display in a gallery configuration. Our best tip is to be patient and collect pieces you love instead of trying to buy it all at once. The best gallery walls are made up of quality pieces that have meaning. You can get creative; however, and use found objects, letters, mirrors, photographs and other memorabilia that will add dimension and texture to your wall.

2. Plan your layout.

After framing and before hanging anything on the wall, plan your layout by laying every thing out on the floor. This will give you the opportunity to visualize how they will look together.

3. Start big.

If you are having trouble creating a layout, start with your largest pieces first, and let the smaller pieces fall naturally into place. You want your largest pieces to be distributed evenly throughout the layout.

4. Get Krafty.

Once you are happy with your layout, use kraft paper to cut out the different sizes and shapes of your items. You can use painters tape to attach each cutout on the wall in your desired design to make sure everything is perfect before hanging.

5. Hammer and hang!

While your kraft paper is still on the wall, hammer your nails in their designated places, then rip off your kraft paper to replace with a frame! So easy!

With a little practice and patience, you can achieve an expertly curated gallery wall in no time! There is no better way to impress your guests and add personality to your home.

#DesignDilemma: Choosing a color palette for your whole home.

We’ve all been there! When you are building/remodeling your home and you are asked what colors you would like to choose for your ENTIRE HOME, we all tend to panic! Do I use the same color throughout? How do I mix colors so they don’t clash? The list goes on. This tends to lead to what we like to call, paint color procrastination. We are here to tell you that this doesn’t have to be stressful! There is a simple way to make sure that the colors you are choosing are cohesive and create a stunning flow through your home.

1. Start with your main/largest area and go from there. This is going to help you identify the palette for the rest of the home. Is there a certain color you absolutely love? Start there. We also suggest allowing this color to be fairly neutral and not too dark. Since it is the largest area of your home, you want the space to feel open and accepting to other accent colors. If the color you love is dark, look at the lighter shade of the same color (you can use the paint indexes found at any paint supply store). For this example, we are starting with Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore.

2.  Start to build your palette using different shades of the same hue. This is a guaranteed way to make sure the colors you are choosing are cohesive. This helps that “paint color procrastination” we were talking about. Using tints or shades of the same color work especially well in spaces that are visually connected.

3. Use accent colors in bathrooms and bedrooms, but make sure they still flow with your main house colors. Using random colors in every bedroom and bathroom can make the paint colors seem like an afterthought. Create continuity by selecting hues with similar undertones. If you love reds with blue undertones, look for other colors with blue undertones.

4. Still unsure? Test your potential palette and see if they visually work together.

You will be able to tell if your color palette is cohesive. If something doesn’t seem right, try taking out a color to see which one is the culprit.

We hope this helps ease some paint color anxiety and helps you tackle your next project! #BuyersGuide: Why is my sofa so expensive?

Today’s furniture buying experience is much like buying a new car. You may want to find the best deal on a car regardless the brand, or you know you want the top of the line, so you expect to spend more money. We all know that the top of the line vehicle is going to have the best construction, highest safety ratings, and longer warranty. However, we seemed to be blinded by furniture quality.  That being said, all furniture is not made equally. The sofa you find at Target for $399 is not going to be the same quality as the sofa at a fine furniture store for $3000. There is a reason why a sofa is priced so high, and we would like to explain and justify that difference today.

It all starts with the frame:

1. A top of the line sofa starts with a solid hard wood like walnut, maple, or oak. Then, the wood is Kiln dried, which eliminates all of the excess moisture in the wood, resulting in a strong product that will not bow or bend over time.

2. That wood is then doubled doweled and glued to each other to create stability and a structurally sound product. In some cases, the wood is cut to interlock with each other, then it is glued together. Corner blocks are triple reinforced with staples, glue and screws to create strong joints that will not loosen over time.

3. There are several different types of spring units that could be added to a frame, but an 8-way hand tied spring system is by far the strongest, most resilient type of support. High gauge spring coil units are dropped into the frame, then hand tied with twine 8 different directions to themselves and to the frame. This creates a unit that distributes weight evenly and keeps the coils from shifting, which eliminates sagging in the frame.

4. The next step in creating a strong piece of furniture includes the added foam for frame protection and comfort. In a high quality frame, there is a strong molded foam lining the edges of the piece to create a sharp look and reduce the risk of the foam breaking down. Then layers of polyester foam will wrap around the frame. Your fabric is then backed and added to the top layer.

Most high end manufactures will have a variety of cushions to choose based on comfort and quality. In brands like Wesley Hall and Taylor King, a high end cushion consists of a molded polyester foam, encased spring coils, memory foam, and/or blend down fill. All of these options have been carefully thought out to make sure the lifetime of your cushion outlasts the competitors. Not only can you customize your cushions, but you have the choice of hundreds of different high end fabrics to fit your personal style and lifestyle.

These are just a few of the reasons why a sofa can be so expensive. But, we believe that investing on an heirloom quality piece will pay for itself in the long run. When buying a sofa based on the price, you may find yourself replacing the sofa every couple of years due to its quality.

So, the next time you are in the store and have a little sticker shock, ask your salesperson to explain to you the quality difference and you will understand why we take pride in well thought out pieces that will last a lifetime.

#DesignDilemma: How do I hang my curtains?

Curtains are such a  common design disaster and you may not even know something is wrong! Let’s go over how to hang your curtains properly, and why these examples work to your advantage. But first, we will address what you may be doing wrong.

1. Hanging your curtains too low:

How to fix it:

Make sure to hang your curtain rod at least 20″ above your window molding OR hang right beneath your crown molding. This creates height and allows more light to enter the room.

2. Hanging your curtains to fit the frame of the window is another common mistake. You want to make sure you are hanging your curtain rod about 8″ out on either side. That way, when you open your curtains, you will displaying the entire window frame!

Combine the first two tips and hang your curtains HIGH AND WIDE. Creating the illusion of a wide and tall window will make your room transform!

3.  Still not seeing results? Your curtains may be too short!

You want to make sure your drapes are either “kissing” the floor, resting on the floor, or puddled for a romantic look. See the diagram below for reference:

Follow these few rules and you will be on the way to curtain success!

#BuyersGuide: Why should I invest in outdoor furniture?

When it comes to picking a perfect outdoor set, the look is important, but durability is essential. It’s tempting to stop by your local hardware store to pick up an inexpensive outdoor set, but is it worth it? In this week’s Buyers Guide, we will cover the top reasons why it is in your best interest to invest in quality and to justify those high price tags.

You’re not alone when you wonder, ” why would I spend this much on outdoor furniture when I can buy the same thing at Lowes or Home Depot?”. You are right in the fact that you can get similar looking pieces for cheaper- but you are not getting the same thing at all. In fact, you will end up spending more money on the cheap stuff over time, because you will have to replace it- multiple times.

High end outdoor furniture manufactures think of YOU from the very beginning of construction.  For this post, we will feature one of Turner’s top selling brands- Summer Classics. Listed below are the reasons why it is priced the way it is, and why you should definitely invest.

1.  Cast Aluminum- Superior grade molten aluminum alloy is hand poured into a mold made from exceptionally detailed woodcarvings. Each casting is hand polished to provide a smooth, finished surface for painting. After a multi-step cleaning process, the furniture receives a baked on powder paint coast much thicker and harder than conventional wet paint, followed by a hand-applied antique accent.

This is just the FRAME of the sofa you are looking at in our store. Keep reading to find out what comes next.

2. N-dura Ultra High UV Resistant Resin Wicker- This resin wicker is guaranteed to not experience any significant color change for 5 years. Their ultra realistic resin varies in color and texture, making each piece unique. All N-dura wicker is memory tested to 50,000 compressions, and is hand-woven over steel-reinforced  heavy gauge aluminum extrusions with a triple antique hand applied fish using nano-ceramic technology.  Unlike wood wicker, this material will stay pliable and not dry out and break.

3. Cushions- Summer classic’s standard cushion is composed of bonded fiber layers on top of polyurethane foam, making them exceptionally comfortable. The ratio of foam to fiber is 50% to 50% once core in inserted into the fabric cushion slip.

Upgrade to their Dream cushion and see the difference! This cushion offers 1.8 density high resilient and California Fire Rated Foam for maximum comfort. Their woven, water-resistant jacket features a “pillow top” of blown-fiber channels providing the utmost quality and softness. Soft, durable, and water-resistant, this is truly the perfect cushion.

4. Fabric-  The standard fabric used on all of our products features 100% solution-dyed acrylic. Each fiber is color saturated from the inside out for a rich, fade resistant color thats lasts even in extreme conditions. These fabrics are fade resistant, water resistant, and mold resistant. Clean these fabrics with a mixture of soap and water, or bleach and water and they are good as new.

Upgrade to a rain fabric and be amazed! This fabric is 100% water resistant and dries immediately when blotted with a towel. The water will never permeate your cushions so you can enjoy a comfortable, dry sofa all day long!

Even though we focused on Summer Classics, all of our top selling brands feature similar quality traits and are guaranteed to stand the test of time. You will save money in the long run and be happier with your purchase, we promise!

Just remember, there is a reason our products are priced the way they are. Just like you’ve always heard- ” You get what you pay for!”

#DesignDilemma: How do I decorate my bookcase?

Bookcases may be the last thing you think about when decorating your space. This is a common design foe because they can make or break a room! Bookcases add color, personality, and can be an easy way to add sophistication when it is seriously lacking. But, where do you start?

If you are a collector of books, let them shine! Every book is a conversation piece and can add a pop of unexpected color. However, the way you organize them can make a difference.

1. Try the color method:

This method is an easy way to add bright color to your room. It truly is an eye catcher! Design hack: take the dust jackets off of your books and you will be surprised how beautiful they are without them!

Another way to organize your books is to place them horizontally and vertically on the shelves. Doing so adds a great platform for accessories and interest when stacking vertically gets too boring.

This brings up another topic to discuss:

2. Accessorize!

Be careful how many knick knacks you display on your shelves. Make sure they have a common design theme or compliment each other! It is also a great idea to speckle in a few mini plants to add a pop of green and a natural texture. Have a collection of vases, plates, or family photos you would like to display? This is where to do it!

These methods only work; however, if you have a lot of books! So, here is a great suggestion if you are not the town book connoisseur.

2.  Add artwork!

You may be surprised to hear that you can add large pieces of art on the molding of your bookshelf! It adds a chic layering effect and can hide some unsightly books that you love but don’t want to display.

You can also do this with mirrors:

We hope this helps you conquer your next bookcase conundrum! Have any other ideas? Let us know! Leave comments below or contact us on our Facebook page! As always, any of our designers would be happy to help you with the next design dilemma!

#DesignDilemma: Decorating with a TV

Today, the television has become a focal point in almost all of our homes. However, it doesn’t have to be as unsightly as you think! There are ways to camouflage a TV to work in your favor. Here are a few of our ideas:

1. The simplest answer may be the best solution. Find an entertainment center that has piers with shelves to display decorative and personal items to make your television seem more like a piece of furniture. The great thing about entertainment centers is that the wire management hides all of those ugly wires. Here is one that is available at Turner’s:

Parker House Entertainment Center $1999

2. The next option uses your television in a composition thats part of a gallery wall. If you have a wall dying for attention around a TV, try displaying your favorite artwork and photographs around it! This idea below also incorporates antlers to add deminsion and texture. Make sure to start with a console or credenza and work around it! If you absolutely have to have a television (let’s face it, we all do!), make it part of your design plan.

3.  If you own your home and want to make the extra expense, a built in wall unit can be a very attractive solution for your television.

#DesignDilemma: What size rug do I need?

There are plenty of reasons to consider placing a rug in your space. They provide comfort, warmth, contrast, and can be color inspiration for your entire design. However, the most commonly asked question still stands: What size rug do I need? The answer depends on the type and size of your room, furniture placement, and sometimes style inspiration.

1. Living Room

Large Living Room | Coastal Style Blog | Image Made In Heaven, via Sletvoll, Decorations Idyll Home

In large living rooms with floating furniture, it is best to find a rug big enough for all of your pieces to sit completely on with 6-10″ of extra space on all sides. This helps center and ground the room, creating a focal point and adding softness. This also helps bring the furniture together and helps your space not look so scattered. Standard rugs for large living rooms are 9’x12′ and 11’x14′.

Tammy Conner

In smaller living rooms, rugs are best placed at least half-way underneath your furniture. Have a small rug under the coffee table? Add a large sisal, jute, or seagrass rug underneath it to add dimension and texture. Standard sizes for this type of space are 6’x9′ or 8’x10′.

2. Dining Rooms

In dining rooms, there are several factors to consider before you buy a rug:

1. When measuring your table, add 24″ on each side and let that be the minimum requirement for rug dimensions. You want your guests to be able to pull out their chair comfortably without getting caught

2. Choose a low pile or flat weave rug, so chairs glide easily.

3. Mimic your rug shape to your table shape. Rectangular rugs look best underneath rectangular and oval tables, round rugs look best with round tables, and square rugs look best under square tables. Be careful though! Also consider the size and shape of your room before you make this decision.

3. Bedrooms
http://tessaneustadt.com

For bedrooms, place your rug underneath the bottom two-thirds of your bed. You want to make sure you have enough room on each side of the bed to cushion your feet when you get up in the morning! You can also layer your rugs, like shown in the photo above.

Find your rug at Turner’s Fine Furniture and our design team will help you make the best decision for your space.
